First Day

Hello Visitors,

Welcome to Minnie Hughes Elementary, the best little school on Yonges Island! At Minnie Hughes Elementary School we are committed to creating a school culture of teamwork and collaboration that will ensure all of our students have the World Class Skills and the Life and Career characteristics of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate. Minnie Hughes continues to provide quality academic and personalized learning opportunities for our students that provide hands-on learning, exploration, inquiry and life and career characteristics. Our educators, students, and parents work collaboratively in setting the tone for student-driven goals that promote academic rigor by being #ALLIN.  Thank you for visiting our site to learn a little more about who we are!  Go Mini-Cats!

Here, you will find all of the reasons why we love learning. At Minnie Hughes, we prioritize strong, foundational learning that educated the "whole child." Through engagement, our "hands-on" approach to education helps us to attract the best teachers to foster learning. As you explore the site, you will see why Minnie Hughes is our parents' first choice.

Parents, there's information that applies to you too! To the left, you will find information on ways you can volunteer at school and other ways to support our learning at home.

News & Announcements

DressCodepolicy

The uniform policy was created by the MHE School Improvement Council and was intended to increase school pride and keep students focused on learning and not on what others are wearing. The uniforms reflect the school colors of maroon and gold. Students may wear maroon or gold. The uniform policy applies to all students in CD through 5th grade. Teachers are expected to enforce our policy. Parents will be called into school if students do not come in proper uniform attire. We will provide uniforms if we have them on hand and the parent agrees or is unavailable. Some may be brand new and some gently used.

Clear Bookbag Policy

Minnie Hughes will be adopting a clear bag policy this year. No worries though, we will be providing every child with a clear book bag during Meet the Teacher Night. So be sure to be in attendance!

In this lesson, you will help students understand how fear works, that it’s okay to be afraid, and how to not let fears control how they live or act. Students will identify things in their world that causes them to worry or fear and work through them together by having a group discussion.

From the perspective of a previous Minicat and a current educator, I love how Minnie Hughes has a warm atmosphere that embraces & cultivates our shared Gullah-Geechie culture. There's no other place that gives me the sense of belonging that Minnie Hughes does & for that, I am forever grateful to be part of this family.2024 Rookie Teacher of the Year, Ms. Zataya Rivenbark
