Guidance counselor
Minicats show Appreciation- National School Counselor's Month

February is National School Counselor's Month!!

Our guidance counselor at Minnie Hughes Elementary is Mr. Willie Brooks. He has been such a valuable asset to our minicat family. With over 11 years invested, Mr. Brooks has always been a positive light for our students, parents, and staff. Check out his responses to some of the most popular questions:

What inspired you to become a school counselor? What do you love most about your role in a school? My desire to help people is central to my "why" for choosing to become a School Counselor.   So, attribute my choice to pursue School Counseling to my own intrinsic will to help others and my mother's insight. The thing I love most about my role is seeing students and families get the tools and support they need and using it to attain desirable outcomes.

Yoga

Here at Minnie Hughes, we prioritize cultivating the "Whole Child." Our students participate in yoga twice a week to help students employ strategies to help them when dealing with day-to-day issues. In yoga, the students learn calm - down strategies, breathing techniques, and how to respond to difficult situations. Yoga, paired with the Second Steps curriculum, helps students to have autonomy while working through difficult situations on their own.

Reading Partners

Here at Minnie Hughes, our students have multiple ways of fill their gaps in reading. Our reading partners program along with our school-wide SIPPS program help us to catch up with foundational reading skills while learning grade-level content within the classrooms.

With the reading partners program, each student receives the direct tutoring model which includes high-impact, one-on-one tutoring with both in-person and online formats. The volunteer-driven model engages community volunteers to support students in developing mastery of key reading skills. Volunteers are trained to implement our evidence-based curriculum rooted in the science of reading

Art Therapy

During sessions, the art therapist discusses students' needs, suggests art media, and work with students to utilize the creative process and resulting artwork to meet therapeutic goals. Art therapists are professionals who possess a Master's Degree in the field of Art Therapy.

Here, at Minnie Hughes, we focus on the whole child and pour into them, one child at a time.

Minicats are one
Minicats show Unity

We know that we all bring different passions, gifts, strengths, and weaknesses to the table. However, the power of our school lies within the family culture that we create. It is the story that we create when we come together and change the narrative. We collaborate until we find the answer.

We are ONE.

News & Announcements

DressCodepolicy

The uniform policy was created by the MHE School Improvement Council and was intended to increase school pride and keep students focused on learning and not on what others are wearing. The uniforms reflect the school colors of maroon and gold. Students may wear maroon or gold. The uniform policy applies to all students in CD through 5th grade. Teachers are expected to enforce our policy. Parents will be called into school if students do not come in proper uniform attire. We will provide uniforms if we have them on hand and the parent agrees or is unavailable. Some may be brand new and some gently used.

Clear Bookbag Policy

Minnie Hughes will be adopting a clear bag policy this year. No worries though, we will be providing every child with a clear book bag during Meet the Teacher Night. So be sure to be in attendance!

In this lesson, you will help students understand how fear works, that it’s okay to be afraid, and how to not let fears control how they live or act. Students will identify things in their world that causes them to worry or fear and work through them together by having a group discussion.

From the perspective of a previous Minicat and a current educator, I love how Minnie Hughes has a warm atmosphere that embraces & cultivates our shared Gullah-Geechie culture. There's no other place that gives me the sense of belonging that Minnie Hughes does & for that, I am forever grateful to be part of this family.2024 Rookie Teacher of the Year, Ms. Zataya Rivenbark
