SIPPS
Systematic Instruction in Phonological Awareness, Phonics, and Sight Words (SIPPS) is a research-based program that helps students in grades K–12 develop reading fluency and comprehension.
The goal of SIPPS is to help students develop the accuracy and automaticity needed for fluent, independent reading. Minnie Hughes prioritizes the need for students to be able to read alone. As a result, we are taking a school-wide approach toward developing independent readers. From 2:20-3:00 everyday, students all go into independent small groups with an adult from the school and working on phonics and fluent reading skills.
-
Approach: Uses a structured-literacy approach with routines focused on phonological awareness, spelling-sounds, and sight words
-
Levels: Has three developmental levels of progression: simple alphabetic, spelling-pattern, and polysyllabic/morphemic
-
Features: Teaches phonics and spelling strategies together, and organizes the English vowel system to demonstrate its logic
-
Benefits: Can be used across all three tiers of instruction and aligns with the MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Support) framework
-
Effectiveness: Has been proven to help students efficiently progress in their mastery of foundational skills
-
Ease of implementation: Can be easily implemented in school- and community-based tutoring programs, afterschool, and other expanded-learning settings
SIPPS has been vetted and approved by state departments of education in many states including SC.
